"Gool Peran Lowen" - Duchy asked to try its hand at Cornish to celebrate St Piran's Day
"MAGA is asking people to try their hand at Cornish to mark St Piran's Day next week
Sometimes a simple mar pleg or meur ras goes a long way - or at least that is what the Cornish Language Partnership is hoping when it celebrates St Piran’s Day next week.
MAGA, a collection of organisations responsible for promoting Cornish, is encouraging everyone in the county to speak a few words of the language to mark the Cornish celebration on March 5.
It has posted four phrases on its website in the hope that people in the county will use them next week.
As well as the Cornish for please and thank you (mar pleg and meur ras), the partnership is also encouraging people to use the Cornish for good day (dydh da) and Happy St Piran’s Day (gool Peran Lowen).
Jenefer Lowe, Cornish language development manager, said celebrations of St Piran are growing in number along with interest in Cornish.
She said: “At a time when we celebrate Cornwall and all things Cornish, wouldn’t it be good if everyone could greet each other in Cornish, or say please or thank you?
“Shopping, working, in school or just in the street – a couple of words of Cornish would make this day even more special.”
Julian German, cabinet member for economy and culture said: “The Cornish language is an important part of Cornish identity and it would be great if more people knew a few Cornish words that they could use in their everyday lives.”
